our story
Sara Assad-mannings
Founder
Hello! I’m Sara, founder and head baker at Bunhead. I started Bunhead on a bit of a whim back in 2020 and I’m so in love with what it’s become. For me, Bunhead is a space of expression. We are by no means a traditional Palestinian bakery, but one born out of a love for the Palestinian flavours I grew up with, and the South London I grew up in. Somewhere two cultures live harmoniously, a mixed-heritage bakery baby. So whilst my personal experience is specific, I hope what the bakery represents, resonates with many. Somewhere we can be ashamedly proud of all the parts of ourselves.
As a Palestinian woman, I believe food is deeply political. Our access to it, the appropriation of it, how we relate to it. I knew I wanted to create something that serves as bold defiance in the face of erasure. What we stand for is clear, and the community around Bunhead is strong. We are forever humbled by the love we have felt and what we’ve managed to achieve. We’ve baked close to 70,000 buns, been able to raise over £10,000 for projects in Palestine, shared our culture with the masses, built a truly precious team and work with friends every day, all in our first years of opening. More power to the community, long live Bunhead!
